Summary The Keepers of the Keys

Sporting a new hairdo and attitude, Kinsey takes a chance with Scot by sharing what's going on inside her head. Tyler tries to impress his crush.

Having literally murdered and buried her own anger, Kinsey becomes a new girl, albeit a little too direct and insensitive. Initially alarmed, Tyler is impressed and uses the Head Key to put knowledge in his head to woo Jackie. With Echo at large with the Anywhere Key, Bode mounts a defense using Double Bubble in all the Key House keyholes. With Ellie's help, Nina unseals Rendell's hidden ping pong room.

Synopsis The Keepers of the Keys

Kinsey dyes her hair, part of doing a new "look," and makes breakfast for everyone. Nina compliments her daughter on her look, and Kinsey says she's starting to feel more like herself. She explains that she's decided to make some changes. Tyler enters and is surprised to see Kinsey cooking. Bode joins them and they start eating. Nina realizes that Kinsey finally picked a drawing for her application, but when she offers to mail it, Kinsey snatches it from her hand and says she'll do it herself, off-handedly commenting that organizational things aren't Nina's forte and that Rendell always took care of things while Nina was busy with her art and fixing up houses. At being told she doesn't have to do everything, Nina leaves, offended.

Tyler asks Kinsey what her attitude towards their mother was about. Kinsey insists she was just being honest, but Tyler insists that she's not being normal.

Outside the academy, Kinsey tells Tyler that she took the fear monster out of her head and buried it. She insists that she's now better than fine while Tyler, alarmed, warns her that it isn't a game. Kinsey says she feels good for the first time since Rendell died, and insists that Tyler not kill her buzz.

Kinsey meets with the Savini Squad and shows them a poster she made for their movie. They love it. She says she's back in their movie if they'll have her. They all look over at Scot, sitting alone, so Kinsey goes over to him and apologies for standing him up at the cover band performance. She offers to make it up to him, and Scot tells her that he's fine with their just being friends. Kinsey tells him that she likes him and they should hang out, and a surprised Scot agrees. She invites him to Key House and Scot says that he'll see her later. Once Kinsey leaves, the Squad comments on how Kinsey has changed. Scot figures that she looked brighter.

Ellie meets Nina at Key House and they have coffee. Nina asks her for help getting in touch with some of Rendell's old friends and learning more about them. Using the old photo, she points out Erin Voss and Mark Cho, and Ellie says that Erin still lives around there but is in a psychiatric hospital. She explains that Erin had a stroke and hasn't spoken in twenty years. Mark died in a house fire a few months back, and Ellie admits that she's the only one left. She talks about how it's therapeutic to be back at Key House. Rendell's parents were never around, making it an adult-free zone. She mentions a ping-pong room down in the basement.

The two women descend to the basement and discover that the old ping-pong room has been walled over. Nina breaks through with a crowbar and they enter. Ellie finds a case and removes something from it, but dismisses it as nothing when Nina notices. Nina asks if Ellie remembers Rendell drawing the omega symbol, and Ellie says she doesn't. When Nina tries the door of an old wardrobe, she discovers that it's locked and Ellie says she doesn't know where the key is. Nina wishes she had known Rendell when he was in high school.

At the McClellan Psychiatric Hospital, Erin sits in a wheelchair in the common room. An orderly brings in a visitor - Echo, who is using the name "Chastity." Once they're alone, Echo tells Erin that it's been a while and asks what happened to her. Erin doesn't respond. As Echo trims Erin's nails, she says that Rendell is dead but it wasn't her fault. (Erin shuts her eyes in reaction.) Echo says that Mark is dead as well, also not her fault. Echo comments that Erin's inability to communicate isn't making this easy. Undeterred, Echo says she just needs to figure out a way to get into Erin's head and whispers that she'll be back soon, distressing Erin.

At the academy, Tyler attends the activities fair and notices the sign for the 5k run. Joe asks if he can help him, and Tyler says he's looking for Jackie. Joe says Jackie asked him to fill in while at choir practice and leads Tyler off, talking about boxing. Joe talks about how he signed up as a sparring partner for a top-ranked boxer, took a swing at him, and missed. The boxer took Joe down, and that's when Joe decided that he would be an English teacher. Joe asks where Tyler's "shadows" are - Javi and Brinker. Tyler is on his own, and Joe tells Tyler that new can be very good.

Bode walks back to Key House and finds Rufus cleaning up the porch. "Afternoon, soldier." He asks if Rufus's mom ever mentioned Lucas. Rufus says Lucas was Ellie's first love. Lucas died and Ellie still mourns him. Bode asks Rufus about the well house, and Rufus says that bad stuff happened there and he's not allowed to go near it. The British used Key House as a base during the Revolutionary War, and defectors were hanged in the well house.

Bode goes to his bedroom and takes out a book he got on the history of Matheson, which talks about how Key House is one of the oldest remaining structures in Matheson. Echo appears in the photo of the well house, calling to Bode. She says that Bode can't protect "them." Bode slams the book shut and throws it to the floor.

Jackie and Eden approach Tyler at his locker. Jackie asks Tyler when he wanted to meet up to sign up sponsors for the 5k, saying Mr. Ridgeway (Joe) told her Tyler wanted to volunteer. Though surprised, he assures Jackie that he wants to volunteer; Eden makes a snarky remark and leaves for Jackie's car. Jackie apologizes for Eden and has Tyler enter his number on her cell phone. He compliments her British flag phone case, and she declares herself an Anglophile.

Tyler finds Joe watering planets in his classroom and asks why he volunteered him for the 5k. High school, says Joe, is the perfect time to try on different hats, to find out who you are, and with whom you surround yourself. Tyler says it feels like people have already made their minds up about him - new kid, dead dad, weird house. Joe advises him to get over his grief for Rendell's death by letting people in. Joe talks about how he used plants to find something in common with his future wife. Tyler warmly asks if Joe plays Cupid with all his students, and Joe admits to a soft spot for underdogs.

At Key House, Bode plugs numerous keyholes with gum to keep Echo from coming in. He spots Tyler in Kinsey's room and tells him that she keeps the Head Key he's searching for in her sock drawer. When Bode wonders what's in it for him not to tell Kinsey anything, Tyler takes Bode to his room and notices the gum. Bode explains that the well lady might come back. Tyler asks if she came back, and Bode says not exactly but Tyler would have to see her for herself. Moving on, Tyler explains that he thought he could put something into his head (the history of Matheson book) since Kinsey took something out. He puts the Head Key into his own neck, and a door appears in the middle of the room. Another Tyler appears, and Bode recognizes the door as the front door of their house in Seattle.

As a precaution, Bode rips out the page with the photo of the well house (where Echo recently appeared) then hands it back to Tyler. Tyler opens the door, tosses the book inside, and closes the door without entering. He asks Bode to ask him something about Matheson, and now knows everything from the book. He then asks if they have a book on England.

Nina, sanding furniture, stops to drink some soda from a mug as she remembers the past.

-----

Rendell finds Nina refinishing a chair cushion and admires her work. He gives her the mug as a one-year anniversary present (for remaining sober) and says that it's a big deal. Nina thanks him and they share a toast with soda. He says that when he left home, he wanted different places and different faces... and he found the best one.

-----

Nina breaks into tears at the memory.

Jackie and Tyler walk through Matheson, gathering sponsors for the run. Tyler drops tidbits of knowledge about England that he picked up from the book, and she explains that she calls herself an Anglophile because she's a huge Jane Austen fan, favoring little-known "Sanditon" over popular fan favorite 'Pride and Prejudice.' He admits that he hasn't read 'Sanditon,' and Jackie talks about Austen at some length, and how it probably isn't Tyler's thing

Scot drives Kinsey to Key House in his rickety car and mentions the three kids that drowned at the sea caves near the cliffs. Inside, Kinsey explains that her family is away and they have the whole place to themselves. She asks what they should do, and then (to Scot's relief) suggests a tour. Kinsey shows Scot the drawing room and the winter study before taking him to her room. (Nervously, Scot wipes his hands and checks his breath as he ascends the stairs.) While Kinsey sits on the bed, Scot awkwardly looks at the things on her dresser. She finally invites him to sit next to her and then says she wants to show him something but swears him to secrecy.

Once Scot agrees, Kinsey demonstrates the Head Key. The revolving door and the other Kinsey appear, assuring Scot that he's neither dead nor hallucinating. She leads him into her head and through her mental interior shopping mall, explaining about the Keys and how magic is real for them. Scot figures that she's joking with him and insists that it's crazy. Kinsey shows her the candy shop filled with her Dad memories, and shares a memory of when Rendell took her to an aquarium for her eighth birthday. Memory-Nina comes over and points out another exhibit to Memory-Kinsey, and Head-Kinsey scowls.

The memory ends and Scot is happy to know that magic exists. As she looks sad, Scot asks if she's okay, and Kinsey says she always thought it was just her and Rendell that day, no Nina. Nina was always there, and Kinsey can't believe she blocked out the memory of her mother. When Scot assures her that it's okay, Kinsey kisses him, and after a moment he kisses her back, right on the mouth.

At the library, Tyler picks out a book on Jane Austen, where Jackie finds him. He hides the book behind his back and says that it's research, but finally shows it to her. He suggests that it was sexist for her to think he might not enjoy Austen, then invites Jackie to have clam chowder with him at Phil's (a diner). Jackie agrees on having chowder but says they should go to Bill's, a better eatery. They argue about best restaurants before Jackie leads Tyler out to rock his taste buds at Bill's.

That night, Tyler visits Kinsey in her room and brings her oyster crackers. She realizes that he went out with Jackie and says that she's happy for him. He compliments her new hair and figures that the Head Key can't be so terrible if it made her better. He explains that he used the Head Key himself and it worked out. A door slams in Key House and they wonder if it's Bode.

Bode hears the same noise and goes to investigate, gripping a sharp wooden stake for protection. More doors slam, and when Tyler and Kinsey come out, Bode tells them Echo is back. More doors slam, and Bode tells his siblings that Echo wants the Keys. Light bulbs explode, and the Lockes see Echo down the hallway.

In the kitchen, Nina goes through the mail. Echo touches the oven with the Lighter Key and the burners burst into flames. Nina turns to see the flames, but Echo is gone.

The Locke siblings hear the smoke detector and head downstairs to check on Nina. Echo grabs Bode at the rear and pulls him into a room, closing the door behind them. She grabs his stake, casually tossing it away, then tells the boy to give her what she wants. When Bode refuses, Echo uses the Anywhere Key to transport them both away.

Kinsey and Tyler reach the kitchen and help put out the fire. Asking Nina if she saw anyone, they realize that Bode is gone. Tyler searches for Bode upstairs but doesn't find him, but coming downstairs he sees an intense ring of fire burning outside of Key House.

Walled by flames from the ring, Echo has Bode and demands the Head Key so she can "find something." Tyler sees their shapes inside the ring but can't get through the fire. Bode holds up the Head Key but realizes that Echo can't take it from him; she needs him to give it to her. Smart boy. Echo says she can be clever as well, tells him to stay tuned, walks out of the ring, and uses the Anywhere Key to teleport away.

With her departure the flames disappear, and Tyler runs to Bode, hugging him. Inside Key House, Kinsey cleans up the kitchen and Nina wonders how the fire started. She wishes Rendell was there, and Kinsey tells her that she was wrong about what she said earlier, saying she realizes Nina was always there for her. Nina assures her that it's fine.

Echo visits the prison and Sam's cell. She tells him that he's there because of his own mistakes, but she's back like she promised and always keeps her promises. She asks if he can keep his promises, and Sam replies that he'll do anything she wants. She warns that he can't stray from the path and she needs to know if she can trust him. Sam says that she always can, and Echo slips the Lighter Key to him through the mesh. He takes it, looks at it, then looks at Echo.
